Turmeric has been the subject of many videos and posts on this channel and there’s good reason for it. Having visited and spent time in India and other parts of Asia countless times, I couldn’t help but notice how prevalent it was and it inspired me to take a closer look. What do you think about when you think of turmeric? A cooking spice? The distinct coloring in curry? A medicinal food that has been used for thousands of years? It seems we all have very different ideas about this miracle food, but we can all agree on one thing: it stains our fingers and it is not fun to wash off your hands! But that’s about the only negative; beyond that it is seriously the health equivalent of gold dust. As I delved deeper and deeper into my research and spoke to locals who incorporated it into their food, drank it, or simply took it as a supplement, they seemed to understand all too well its incredible properties and benefits for the human body.
Within turmeric is a medicinal compound called curcumin and this is where things get interesting. Curcumin, a powerful antioxidant is truly one of the most powerful medicinal wonders and is responsible for such health benefits as amazing anti-inflammatory effects, improved brain function and preventative medicine against brain-related diseases. Turmeric, or rather the curcumin within, also lowers heart disease and reduces the risk of cancer and can even be used as cancer treatment! Like I said, we’re talking about serious stuff here. But here’s the real beauty of it all… It doesn’t require a prescription, is totally safe, can be incorporated into foods or drinks, or taken in a capsule and can be bought very easily in the right supermarket or online.
Having spent a lot of time in Japan I can even tell you that it’s widely used as a hangover cure and sold in almost all convenience stores! It really does fix everything.
The irony is that nature often makes it painfully clear what we should be eating and we ironically spend too much time not paying attention and looking in the wrong places, and too much time and money making ourselves even sicker by not listening to experience. Let’s face it, cultures around the world knew something we didn’t and thousands of years of practice can’t be wrong.
