To our health,
Many traditions around the world enjoy a cup of warm milk to help calm the body and mind as well as invite sleep. In my version of this ancient bedtime custom, I trade in dairy milk for anti-inflammatory coconut milk which is sweet, lusciously creamy and rich. By starting with a cup of calming lemon balm, we harness this herbs ability to quiet a restless mind and soothe anxiety. I also add in adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha or shatavari, common in ayurvedic healing to help the body “adapt” to stress. You can find these at your local health store, Whole Foods Market or online. The next time you feel sleepless or stressed, make yourself a cup of my favorite nourishing bedtime elixir to get your beauty sleep.
1 1/2 cups water
1 – 2 bags Lemon Balm Tea
1/2 cup full fat coconut milk
1 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
1 ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground ashwagandha or shatavari
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
Bring water to a boil in a saucepan. When water is at a gentle simmer, turn the heat off and steep tea for 10 minutes with the lid on. Discard tea bag. Add the rest of the ingredients to the pan and stir to combine.
Enjoy 1 hour before bedtime. Store leftovers in a glass jar in the refrigerator up to 5 days.
