Adding facemasks to your skin care routine can be a luxurious and nourishing part of your self-care. Masks work to hydrate and improve the look and feel of your skin. In addition, this mask created especially for acne prone skin contains bentonite clay, which helps to remove excess oils and pull out impurities. The autophagy-activating polyphenols from rosemary and thyme will help with the inflammation that comes along with breakouts. They contribute antimicrobial properties that are helpful if you’re dealing with acne and want to foster the growth of beneficial bacteria but eliminate the kind that contributes to acne and inflammation. Yogurt and raw honey help to rebalance the skin and support the skin’s microbiome — yes, just like the gut, the skin has a microbiome too! Add soothing lavender essential oil to counteract inflammation and optional tea tree essential oil for more antimicrobial effects — use just a drop though, tea tree oil is best used as a spot treatment for trouble areas.
*To make rosemary and thyme tea: steep ¼ teaspoon dried thyme and ¼ teaspoon dried rosemary in ¼ cup of boiling water for four minutes — save what you don’t use and flavor your water or tea with it for an extra dose of polyphenols.
In a small bowl mix the bentonite clay, tea (if using), yogurt, honey and essential oils until thoroughly combined. Apply the mask evenly to your face and let it stay on for 10 to 20 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water.
Makes about four applications. Store in the refrigerator and use within four days to prevent any mold growth.
