Choose Red Wine Over White
There are thousands of studies showing that resveratrol, a polyphenol, helps slow the aging process. It does this by promoting longevity via a class of proteins called sirtuins. I was fortunate enough to have spent time with Dr. David Sinclair, the foremost researcher on resveratrol, who discovered that it was the most powerful sirtuin-1 activator of all the natural compounds he tested.
Resveratrol is found in many different foods and supplements and is also found in the skins of grapes. Since red wines typically enjoy extended contact time with the grape’s skin during fermentation, they will naturally have higher levels of this anti-oxidant rich compound.
This is one of the easiest, most effective quick switches you can make. Next time you open a bottle, go for the deep, dark, robust reds over the lighter blancs or chardonnays. You’ll not only support the activation of your longevity gene but also benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties that resveratrol also provides.
